Title: Grief Counseling Supervision

Abstract:

Future clinicians in helping professions are rarely offered standalone grief and loss courses or courses where related content is integrated. In addition to the lack of grief and death education training in curricula of helping professions, clinicians’ own grief experiences may increase the tendency to rely on clinical supervisors while working with clients presenting grief and loss. Addressing counselors’ loss experiences in supervision adequately can be a beneficial and meaningful intervention for clients presenting grief. However, counselors with unaddressed loss experiences may encounter various challenges, such as avoidance of particular clients.

In this presentation, the author will discuss how existing grief and counseling supervision theories address the grief supervision process. Then, based on the intersectionality of counseling supervision models and grief models, a potential hybrid model of grief supervision for counseling supervisors will be introduced.

Learning Objectives:

1.    Analyzing the current state of grief and loss education in curricula of helping professions to identify gaps in training and understand the roles of clinical supervisors in addressing future clinicians’ own and their clients’ grief experiences.

2.    Evaluating how grief supervision is addressed in grief and counseling supervision theories.

3.    Learning a new modality of grief supervision incorporating the developmental process of future clinicians’ grief competency and clinical supervisors’ roles.
